Littleton, New Hampshire’s Most Haunted Places
As the spookiest of seasons approaches, we wanted to highlight some of the local haunts. Places that have supernatural stories, occurrences, and legends that keep us up at night. Whether or not you believe in ghosts, these places are sure to excite any one who is a fan of the frightening!
10. Nancy Brook Trail
CRAWFORD NOTCH STATE PARK – A 4.8-mile moderate hike steeped in a tragic 1788 historical event. Legend says Nancy Barton perished here of hypothermia while chasing her unfaithful fiancé. Intrepid hikers traversing the path near the brook and Nancy Cascade claim to hear a woman’s faint, mournful cries blending with the rushing water and wind.
9. The Ghost Profile House
FRANCONIA NOTCH STATE PARK – Once one of the grandest luxury hotels in the country, the massive Profile House famously burned to the ground in a devastating 1923 fire. Visitors exploring the old resort footprints near Echo Lake late at night frequently report unexplainable cold pockets, the faint smell of woodsmoke, and a heavy, lingering Gilded Age presence
8. Weathervane Theatre
WHITEFIELD – Doused in an authentic, historic barn structure converted for live stage productions in 1966. Weathervane Theater actors and stagehands have long swapped stories about a resident phantom who roams the backstage rafters, causing unexplained equipment malfunctions, cold spots on stage, and the sound of disembodied footsteps when the auditorium is empty.
7. Thayer’s Inn
LITTLETON – Operating continuously since 1843, the historic Thayer’s Inn features classic sloping walls and old-fashioned architecture. While management downplays the spirits, generations of travelers have logged eerie experiences and classic poltergeist vibes during their stays
6. The Ghost of Mount Prospect
WEEKS STATE PARK – Located just past the town line, this dark mountain peak features a historic stone fire tower and a 1912 mansion. Local mountain folklore states that late-night visitors frequently experience sudden electronic battery drains, heavy unexplainable dread, and a shifting shadow figure that paces the historic stone walls surrounding the summit overlook.
5. Littleton Opera House
LITTLETON – A towering, historic landmark right on Main Street. The Littleton Opera House is a grand old building that functions as a community space but is also well known among regional ghost tour enthusiasts for its heavy atmosphere and unexplained late-night noises.
4. The Colonial Theatre
BETHLEHEM – Operating since 1915, this is one of the oldest continuously running movie houses in the country. Colonial Theatre staff and late-night patrons have long whispered about classic phantom footsteps, unexplained stage echoes, and cold drafts sweeping the historic auditorium when empty.
3. Mt. Waternomee Bomber Crash Site
WOODSTOCK – A 3.8-mile rugged, off-trail bushwhack leading to the preserved wreckage of a 1942 Douglas B-18 bomber crash. Hikers exploring the silent, debris-scattered forest frequently report a heavy, somber atmosphere and an unsettling feeling of being watched among the wreckage.
2. Omni Mount Washington Resort
BRETTON WOODS – Widely considered the most haunted building in New Hampshire, centered around the active spirit of Princess Carolyn Foster. As the wife of the resort’s original builder, Joseph Stickney, Princess Carolyn spent many summers enjoying the luxury estate that is now the Mount Washington Resort. Today, guests staying in Room 314—her former private bedroom featuring her original four-poster bed—frequently report waking up in the dead of night to find an elegant woman in Victorian clothing sitting at the edge of the mattress silently brushing her hair.
1. The Betty & Barney Hill Incident
FRANCONIA NOTCH – Just south of the town line on Route 3, this is the historic location of America’s first widely publicized alien abduction in September 1961. Driving through the pitch-black Notch at night, the couple experienced two hours of unexplained “lost time,” a landmark event commemorated by a New Hampshire state historical marker near the Indian Head Resort.
