Featured Member: Crazy Horse Family Campground

Featured member Crazy Horse Family Campground offers much more than a scenic place to pitch a tent or park an RV. Owned and operated by Patti and Doug Kenney, this award-winning, family-focused campground has become a summer tradition for generations of campers who return year after year for the fun, the friendships, and the unforgettable memories.

A Family Dream Turned Reality

Before Crazy Horse, Patti and Doug were both entrenched in the corporate world. But their passion for the outdoors and shared dream of owning a campground led them to take a leap. That leap has since blossomed into one of the most beloved seasonal campgrounds in New Hampshire.

“Our campers are like family,” Patti shared. “It’s like having 150 grandkids. The kids come flying out of their cars to see us again, to get measured on our office wall, to see how much they’ve grown since last summer.” That personalized care extends to everything Patti and Doug do, from handpicking their guests to running interactive events designed with families and kids in mind.

Campground Features and Community Feel

Crazy Horse Family Campground boasts 175 sites, including accommodations for tents, campers, and RVs. Many campers return annually for the same weekends, with families securing their preferred spots a year in advance. This continuity has cultivated a true sense of community among guests. It’s common for extended families to camp together, growing traditions and memories that span generations.

The campground prioritizes safety, fun, and an environment where children thrive. Patti proudly describes how some campers learned to ride bikes, lost their first teeth, or learned to swim on the grounds. “They had the best childhood because of the atmosphere here,” she says.

Packed Calendar, Purposeful Events

Crazy Horse isn’t just a place to relax. It’s a place to engage. The Kenneys design a full calendar of themed weekends and family-friendly programming. Whether it’s Super Soaker Water Weekend, where guests of all ages get drenched in a campground-wide water battle, or Christmas in July, complete with Santa and festive decorations, there’s always something happening.

A standout summer tradition is the Spud Spectacular, a community-driven baked potato bar where campers contribute toppings ranging from pulled pork to diced steak. Events like these transform the campground into a shared backyard, fostering bonds between seasonal regulars and first-time visitors alike.

Other favorite activities include carnival weekends with dunk tanks and homemade games, bucket golf tournaments for adults, and bicycle parades where kids decorate their bikes and tour the campground in a colorful procession. During the summer, Patti and Doug also organize regular kids’ activities, ensuring that even on quiet weekends, there’s something fun in store.

A Hands-On Approach and Personal Touch

Reservations at Crazy Horse aren’t made online. Instead, guests must call in – a decision Patti and Doug stand by firmly. “We like to know who’s coming in,” Patti explained. “We want to make sure they’re a good fit for our family-focused atmosphere. The kids are our number one priority.” This personal approach helps maintain the safe, welcoming environment the campground is known for.

While weekdays are often quieter, weekends during the peak season are consistently booked, and advanced reservations are strongly encouraged, especially for holiday weekends.

Seasonal Commitment and Year-Round Passion

The campground opens to seasonal guests in early May and welcomes the general public shortly after, operating through Columbus Day weekend in October. That final holiday weekend features one of Crazy Horse’s most beloved traditions: a haunted walk and group trick-or-treating event that last year included 96 kids.

Once the season winds down, Patti and Doug take some well-earned time to enjoy snowmobiling and visiting family, but their passion for the campground never fades. “We’re here 24/7 during the season, and we love it,” Patti said. “There are good days and tough days, like any job, but when the kids come running across the grounds to give you a hug, that makes everything worth it.”
