Featured member, Lisbon Post Office, is proud to serve the residents and businesses of Lisbon, New Hampshire, and the surrounding communities of Grafton County. Located at 80 North Main Street in the heart of the village, the Lisbon Post Office is a cornerstone of daily life in this historic New England town, providing essential mail and shipping services to the area’s approximately 1,600 residents.

A Community with Deep Roots

To understand the importance of the Lisbon Post Office, it helps to know the community it serves. Lisbon, incorporated in 1824, carries a rich history that stretches back to a colonial charter granted in 1763 by Governor Benning Wentworth. The town was named by Governor Levi Woodbury in honor of Lisbon, Portugal, a nod to his friend Colonel William Jarvis, who had served as consul there. Nestled in the valley along the Ammonoosuc River and surrounded by the White Mountains, Lisbon is a quintessential Grafton County community with a proud industrial and agricultural heritage.

In its heyday, Lisbon was home to three of the five peg mills in the entire United States, and the Parker Young Company was once the largest manufacturer of piano sounding boards in the world. The town also claims the distinction of being the site of New Hampshire’s first rope ski tow. Today, Lisbon remains a close-knit community that values its natural setting, historic structures, and local institutions, including the annual Lilac Festival held each Memorial Day weekend.

The United States Postal Service: A Trusted American Institution

The United States Postal Service has been a foundational institution of American civic life since 1775, when the Continental Congress appointed Benjamin Franklin the first Postmaster General. The Postal Clause of the U.S. Constitution formally empowered Congress to establish post offices and post roads, reflecting the framers’ belief that a strong postal network was essential to binding the nation together. Today, USPS delivers to nearly 170 million addresses across all 50 states, operating as a self-sustaining independent agency of the federal government that receives no tax dollars for its operating expenses.

With more than 525,000 career employees, USPS is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation, six and often seven days a week. Its mission, as mandated by Congress, is to provide prompt, reliable, and efficient services to all communities, rural and urban alike. For small towns like Lisbon, the local post office represents far more than a place to buy stamps; it is a vital hub of commerce, communication, and community connection.
