Welcome, featured member North Country Pride, to the Littleton Area Chamber of Commerce. In Littleton, a committed group of individuals has made significant strides in advocating for and celebrating the LGBTQ+ community through North Country Pride. Established in 2019, this organization rapidly became a beacon of support and education in the North Country region.

The Birth of North Country Pride

The idea for North Country Pride was conceived during a meeting at the Little Village Bookstore. Despite facing challenges, including a pandemic-induced cancellation, the organization adapted by organizing a “Pride Ride” on September 12, 2020. Community members supported the motorcade as it traveled through Littleton, Franconia, and Bethlehem.

Mission and Vision

According to board member Ronnie Sandler, the core purpose of North Country Pride was to create a pride festival. However, the organization also raises awareness of the LGBTQ+ community in the region. “There are a lot of us in the North Country. Some may know many LGBTQ people in the area, but many don’t. We wanted to bring that awareness to both the local community and LGBTQ+ families living here,” said Sandler.

Former co-chair Kerri Harrington emphasized the importance of education and support for LGBTQ+ youth in rural areas. “We have a lot of transgender and gay kids in this area. They should know adults are rooting for them. North Country Pride gives them people to look up to and builds a support system for the entire community,” she explained.

Overcoming Isolation

Feelings of isolation can significantly impact LGBTQ+ kids and teens in rural areas. The Movement Advancement Project (MAP) estimates that between 2.9 million and 3.8 million gay, lesbian, transgender, and bisexual people live in rural America. This approximates three to five percent of the estimated 62 million rural residents nationwide.

Looking Ahead

North Country Pride continues to host its annual Pride Ride each September, build partnerships, and garner community support to provide a safe and supportive rural experience for the North Country’s LGBTQ+ youth.

North Country Pride is more than just an organization; it’s a movement towards inclusivity and support for the entire LGBTQ+ community in the North Country. By fostering awareness, education, and celebration, they pave the way for a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.
