A 45-Year Legacy of Community Theatre in Northern New Hampshire

Since its founding in 1978 as the Upstage Players, featured member Theatre UP has been a cornerstone of community theatre in northern New Hampshire. With a mission to bring exceptional theatrical experiences to the local community, Theatre UP has consistently delivered a wide range of productions, including classic plays, comedies, musicals, and even youth performances. As the theatre celebrates its 45th season, it continues to engage audiences with high-quality productions while providing valuable opportunities for local talent to develop their skills.

In 2023, the New Hampshire Theatre Alliance recognized Theatre UP with 16 nominations, nine top-three nominations, and five awards. This recognition speaks volumes about the dedication and professionalism of the team behind Theatre UP, including its founding Artistic Director, Andrew Lidestri. The theatre’s commitment to producing top-tier performances has garnered widespread support from audiences and the local community.

This November, Theatre UP launches its latest production, “Fiddler on the Roof,” a beloved classic that tells the story of Tevye, a poor Jewish milkman, who struggles to maintain his family’s cultural and religious traditions in the face of changing times and external pressures. Directed by Lidestri, the production promises to deliver an immersive experience, bringing the audience closer to the action than ever before. Performed at the Littleton Opera House, the show will run for several weeks, offering theatre lovers an opportunity to see one of Broadway’s most iconic musicals brought to life in an intimate setting.

“The show speaks to the importance of community in the face of change,” said Lidestri. “It’s sad, beautiful, and funny — all at once. We are bringing this production directly to the audience to highlight the characters’ experiences in the small village of Anatevka.”

Following the success of previous productions, including sold-out performances in the fall, winter, and spring of 2023, Theatre UP is looking forward to welcoming audiences to this next chapter of its season. For more information on tickets and showtimes, visit Theatre UP’s website.

A Mission for Excellence

In 2015, Theatre UP adopted a new mission: “Creating Exceptional Theatre in the Community Setting.” This mission reflects the theatre’s commitment to producing high-quality performances while involving local community members in the process. By raising the stakes and improving its standards, Theatre UP has been able to provide audiences with professional-quality productions while maintaining a community-centered approach.

Theatre UP’s mission extends beyond just entertainment. It also focuses on education and training opportunities for individuals of all ages who are interested in the performing arts. Whether it’s acting, directing, set design, or costume creation, participants are encouraged to develop new skills and explore theatre arts in a professional setting. The theatre’s unique approach creates a supportive environment for both seasoned performers and newcomers, making it a valuable cultural asset in the greater Littleton area.

Youth Opportunities

In recent years, Theatre UP has expanded its youth programming, offering children and young adults the chance to participate in productions and gain hands-on experience in theatre. Last year’s production of “The Lion King JR” was a resounding success, with over 50 children participating. The theatre is continuing this trend in 2024 with its upcoming production of “Finding Nemo JR.” This show will introduce the children to the art of puppetry, allowing them to work with intricate puppets to bring the story of “Finding Nemo” to life in a new and exciting way.

“Youth theatre is a key part of our mission,” explained Lidestri. “We’re giving these kids an opportunity to develop not just acting skills but also communication, teamwork, and creativity — all while having fun. The community has been incredibly supportive of these programs, and we’re excited to see them grow.”

Audience Support and Community Engagement

Over the years, Theatre UP has built a loyal following of audience members who appreciate the theatre’s dedication to providing meaningful, culturally relevant, and entertaining programming. Audience support has been crucial to the success of Theatre UP, especially during challenging times when live performances were under threat.

The theatre offers a range of opportunities for audience members to get involved and show their support, from purchasing season tickets to donating or becoming sponsors. With this backing, Theatre UP continues to produce high-quality shows and expand its programming to reach more people in the region.

A Rich History

Theatre UP’s story began with a 1978 production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado, performed by students, staff, and associates of Lisbon Schools. Following the success of this production, a public meeting was held to form what was then known as the Upstage Players. This new group, composed of teachers, students, and community members, began producing two shows annually, including a stage play and a musical. Over the years, the organization expanded, drawing talent from surrounding communities and establishing itself as a premier community theatre.

In 1991, the Upstage Players became a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, allowing the theatre to attract new volunteers, secure funding, and produce more professional-level productions. Today, Theatre UP continues to honor its rich history while evolving to meet the needs of a growing and diverse community of theatre lovers.

As Theatre UP moves forward into its 45th season, it remains committed to creating exceptional theatre and fostering community through the performing arts. Whether you’re a long-time supporter or a first-time attendee, Theatre UP welcomes you to experience the magic of live theatre in Littleton, New Hampshire.
